Depot Management System for Buses and Trams
The company
Mainzer Mobilität (MM) transports an average of 175,000 passengers in Mainz and the surrounding area by bus and streetcar every working day. In order to operate efficiently and optimize the use of resources, the company has digitized and automated numerous processes in both personnel scheduling and
depot management – with solutions from PSI.
Digital processes for greater efficiency
Around 550 drivers in a total of 130 diesel buses, 27 electric buses and 41 streetcar trains transport more than 53 million passengers a year to destinations in Mainz and the surrounding area.
Responsibility for this lies with the Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft, which communicates under the Mainzer Mobilität brand and is a subsidiary of the Mainzer Stadtwerke AG group of companies.
To improve the cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and transparency of operations and workshops, the transport company relies on digitalized processes for both vehicle and personnel scheduling, using the Depot Management System PEAK.DMS (formerly PSItraffic) and the personnel scheduling system PEAK.PROFAHR — both solutions provided by Peak Mobility.
With PROFAHR, MM complies with all legal, collective agreement, and company-specific regulations regarding driving and working hours, as well as payroll-relevant aspects such as bonuses and flat rates. MM was also looking for functions for vacation planning and for simple and fast service registration.
In vehicle scheduling, the use of the DMS improves all work processes and information flows for and between the departments of vehicle service, the workshop, and driver service information.
Last but not least, it was important for MM that the system could support a fleet of up to 300 vehicles and allow for the addition of further modules to both solutions.
Relief for all user groups
Today, the company uses, among other things, the simple and fast shift check-in with integrated driver’s license verification via specially installed terminals — a tremendous relief, especially during peak times. When a driver starts a shift, they simply hold their driver’s license with an RFID chip up to one of two terminals equipped with an integrated reader. The chip number is stored in the personnel records as a secondary selection number. As soon as the device reads the chip, a short confirmation appears on the screen, followed immediately by the login screen so that the next person can check in. All shift check-ins recorded via PROFAHR are queried in real time by a web service of the Depot Management System, which immediately visualizes the current data for the staff on duty in the control center.
In vehicle scheduling, the use of the DMS improves all work processes and information flows for and between the departments of vehicle service, the workshop, and driver service information. Due to the mixed operation of buses and trains, as well as the diverse and sometimes topographically challenging vehicle arrangements in an underground garage, these require particularly sophisticated vehicle and rotation scheduling. The system assigns rotations to vehicles in such a way that the workshop is optimally utilized, and refueling and cleaning intervals are carried out as scheduled with minimal downtime.
