Why the Electrification of the Fleet Requires a New Approach to Dispatching

The route has been assigned, and the vehicle departs on time—so far, so good. But a few hours later, there isn’t enough range left for the next assignment, or the vehicle is stuck in the depot and can’t get out because it’s blocked by another vehicle. What follows is a familiar scenario for many dispatchers: last-minute rescheduling, manual interventions under time pressure, and, in the worst case, canceled trips. As the proportion of battery-electric buses in the fleet grows, this pattern becomes a structural challenge—and traditional scheduling approaches are reaching their limits.

The Structural Problem: Planning Without a Long-Term Perspective
The traditional scheduling logic is simple: A vehicle that is available and suitable is assigned to the next route. For diesel vehicles, this principle has worked reliably for decades. For electric buses, however, it falls short. Charge levels, charging times, charging points, and parking locations don’t just affect the next cycle—they influence the entire workday. Anyone who considers these factors in isolation is planning blindly for what comes next. The result: Bottlenecks that would otherwise be detected early only become apparent when there’s barely any time left to act.


The Approach: Anticipating Rather Than Reacting
Predictive dispatching – as implemented in Peak Mobility’s PEAK.DMS – fundamentally changes the underlying logic of vehicle assignment. Instead of dispatching route by route, contiguous routes are linked into chains, and each assignment checks whether a vehicle can serve the entire chain – including projected fuel consumption, charging times at the depot, and realistic buffers. If no vehicle is suitable for the entire chain, the system automatically selects the best available one—and provides early warning of any gaps that may arise. This allows time to take action before a bottleneck becomes a problem.


What this means in practice
The effects are evident in several areas at once: fewer short-notice, ad hoc interventions; greater planning certainty for the dispatch team; and a depot scheduling system that takes into account which vehicle needs to depart next and when. The transition between two operating days is also factored in—ensuring that vehicles scheduled for an early departure the next morning are actually ready for service. For management, this means fewer operational exceptions that need to be escalated and a more robust basis for decisions regarding fleet utilization and charging infrastructure.

The electrification of the fleet is not a project that will ever be fully completed—it is constantly changing the requirements for operations and control. Those who do not help develop the scheduling logic will feel the additional burden: in the form of manual interventions, planning uncertainty, and vehicles that are available but cannot be deployed.
